What’s Coming in Magento 2.2

The latest version of Magento 2, Magento 2.2 is expected to be released in September. Magento recently offered a sneak peek into some of the improvements and new features we can expect in 2.2. Here’s a quick summary of the highlights.

1. Advanced Reporting panel

The new advanced reporting module in the admin panel, available in both Community and Enterprise, will provide better reporting for products, orders, and customers. For example, you will be able to view orders by region, status, order value and more. View product data based on revenue, quantity sold, and best-selling products. The dashboard is very user-friendly and displays data using tables, charts, and graphs. Data can also be viewed using customized date ranges, much like Google Analytics.

2. Fraud Protection integration

Magento 2.2 will include integration with Signifyd, a fraud protection service. This tool will identify and reject fraudulent orders and provide reimbursement to the merchant. A Signifyd subscription is required to use this feature.

3. Platform improvements

On the technical side of things, 2.2 features improved security. This was achieved by removing unserialized calls and upgrading the hashing algorithm. The development experience will also be better on 2.2, thanks to improved cron and JavaScript exceptions logging and minimized core for plugins. Updates to the technology stack include removing PHP 5.6 and adding PHP 7.1, removing Varnish 3 and adding Varnish 5, and adding Redis 3.2 and MySQL 5.7. The component library has also been updated for better UI. Magento 2.2 also includes WCAG 2.0 support and pipeline deployment. The new pipeline will enable developers to run and deploy separately and allows for quicker production environment upgrades. For Enterprise Edition only, 2.2 will have mass asynchronous operations capability.

4. Performance improvements

Finally, Magento 2.2 incorporates indexer, cart, and cache improvements. The performance toolkit has also been updated for faster speeds and expanded profiles.
