Be Kind To Your Mobile Users, It’s National Cell Phone Courtesy Month
July is National Cell Phone Courtesy Month and usually revolves around cell phone usage etiquette. Everyone appreciates good manners on the phone, so we thought we would take it a step further – to your site. It’s no secret that mobile use continues to rise. It’s important to have a mobile-friendly website because your users are browsing your site via mobile devices; here are 5 ways to be kind to them when they do:
1. Simple navigation
Whether browsing by desktop or mobile, your navigation needs to be clear and simple. Simplicity and clarity are necessities for mobile users; after all, they’re dealing with much smaller screens. Combine categories, add dropdowns, include site search – do whatever you need to do to ensure the mechanism people use to move around your site is clear and easy-to-understand on screens of any size.
2. Size matters
From enormous monitors to tiny handhelds, people use different screen sizes. You need to always be aware and be prepared for any size. A responsive design solves most of the problems associated with differences in screen size. Make sure you test on multiple devices to ensure your site is showing up appropriately.
3. Use buttons
Keep in mind – your mobile visitors are using smartphones and tablets, so your site needs to be designed for touch. Proper spacing and clear navigation make moving around your site quick and easy. Buttons make it even easier; they clearly indicate what elements users can click on and what their next steps should be. Buttons are also easy to highlight or indent when pressed so your users know their request is being processed, even in the case of slow speeds (an element not always under your control).
4. Cut down on input
You want visitors to engage and convert; if they’re not buying today, maybe they’re subscribing to your blog or downloading resources. In order to increase your conversion rate, you’ll want to keep your forms short and sweet. Desktop users tend to leave when faced with a lot of required text input and mobile users have an even shorter attention span. Typing is generally a slower, more difficult process on mobile devices, so be kind to your mobile visitors and keep the required text input to a minimum.
5. Click-to-call
All of your phone numbers should be set up for click-to-call. If your visitors are on a mobile device and want to call you, make it easy for them! They’ll be far more likely to give you a call because you’ve made it so easy for them. Think about the desired actions you want your visitors to take – simplify them and watch your conversion rate skyrocket!
People tend to browse on mobile and buy on desktop – that’s changing. It’s getting easier and easier to complete transactions on mobile devices, and people are becoming increasingly more comfortable doing so. If you want to keep up with them, ensure your site is courteous to mobile users every month of the year. Be nice to your mobile users and they’ll be nice to you (by staying on your site longer).
